And although they are often spoken with resentment or superficiality, it is also true that behind them there is usually a sincere concern: how can the Gospel of poverty be reconciled with the existence of the Vatican and the patrimony of the Church?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The question is not new. It has existed for centuries. But today it carries a special force in a world marked by inequality, scandal, distrust toward institutions, and a profound spiritual crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why it is important to respond with serenity, theological rigor, and pastoral honesty. Not with propaganda. Not with easy slogans. Not by denying the sins and errors of men within the Church. But neither by accepting simplistic caricatures that distort reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because the real question is not simply:
\u201cWhy does the Vatican have wealth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe deeper question is:
\u201cWhat does wealth really mean within the Church? What did Christ want? What did He condemn? And what did He not condemn?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nThe First Great Confusion: Mistaking Personal Wealth for Sacred Patrimony<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Many people imagine the Vatican as some kind of gigantic bank where the Pope lives like a billionaire surrounded by luxury while the world starves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that image is deeply distorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Personal wealth is one thing.
Sacred, historical, and artistic patrimony is something entirely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhen someone enters Saint Peter’s Basilica and sees marble, art, mosaics, relics, and monumental architecture, they often think:
\u201cAll of this could be sold to feed the poor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe statement sounds compassionate. But it ignores several realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of those works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, even if the Church sold all the artistic patrimony of the Vatican, world poverty would still exist. Hunger is not solved by destroying cathedrals. It is solved by transforming social structures, human hearts, and unjust economic systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And here something important appears:
many people demand absolute poverty from the Church\u2026 while never demanding the same from governments, multinational corporations, celebrities, or economic elites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nDid Jesus Condemn All Wealth?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And this is essential to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christ condemned disordered attachment to money.
He condemned greed.
He condemned the idolatry of power.
He condemned exploiting the poor.
He condemned turning money into a god.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBut He never taught that all material possessions were evil in themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact, the Gospel shows wealthy people who followed Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Joseph of Arimathea was a rich man and offered his tomb for the Lord.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

- Many of the women who accompanied Christ financially supported the mission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
The problem was never possessing goods.
The problem was allowing possessions to own the human heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\nChrist said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cYou cannot serve both God and money.\u201d

The Temple of Jerusalem was filled with gold, ornaments, and symbolic richness. And it was God Himself who gave detailed instructions for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This surprises many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because there is a modern idea that says:
\u201cif something looks poor externally, then it is holier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nBut Christian tradition never thought that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Church has always understood that the best should be offered to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to glorify the clergy.

It elevates the soul.
It breaks banality.
It reminds us that the sacred is not ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhen someone contemplates the Sistine Chapel, they are not merely looking at luxury. They are contemplating centuries of Christian civilization trying to express something of divine glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- clericalism crushes souls;<\/li>\n\n\n\n

- faith becomes worldly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
That truly contradicts the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because Christ did not come to found a political elite.
He came to save souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd when men within the Church drift away from that mission, they cause immense harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Church is holy because of Christ.

Jesus did not leave behind a book falling from heaven.
He did not leave behind merely moral ideas.
He did not leave behind an individualistic spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHe founded a visible Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vatican City exists to guarantee the spiritual independence of the Church from political powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, from there the Church sustains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- historical archives;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- universities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- charitable aid;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- humanitarian diplomacy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- cultural preservation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- worldwide evangelization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
The Catholic Church remains one of the largest charitable organizations on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Millions of people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
- eat;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- study;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- receive medical care;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- find shelter;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- receive the sacraments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- survive wars and persecutions;
thanks to Catholic institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nAnd paradoxically, this rarely appears in headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nThe Modern Mindset Distrusts the Sacred<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Today there is a cultural tendency to reduce every reality to economic criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So people look at a cathedral and think:
\u201cHow much money is that worth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nBut a temple is not merely money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- history;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- faith;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- identity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- memory;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- culture;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- prayer made visible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Nobody enters an important museum demanding that all the works be melted down and converted into cash.
Yet many demand exactly that from the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because often the issue is not economic.
It is spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe modern world tolerates luxury when it serves entertainment.
But it becomes deeply irritated when something is dedicated to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nCatholics Must Also Examine Their Conscience<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Now, this article should not be used to justify triumphalism or comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Church continually needs purification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\nThe World\u2019s Problem Is Not That the Vatican Exists<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
The true modern tragedy is another:
we have lost the sense of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWe live in a civilization capable of spending obscene fortunes on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christ never promised that His Church would be popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\nThe True Wealth of the Church<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
The Church\u2019s greatest wealth is not its buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- the sacraments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- the Eucharist;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- doctrine;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- the saints;<\/li>\n\n\n\n

Yes, there are sins within the Church.
Yes, there are human contradictions.
