Who is the devil according to the Church?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church teaches that the devil is a <strong>created angel, originally good<\/strong>, who through a free act of pride rebelled against God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sacred Scripture presents him clearly as a personal spiritual being:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world\u201d (Rev 12:9).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives us a first important key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>\u201cDevil\u201d and \u201cSatan\u201d are not originally proper names, but titles that describe his activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Devil, Satan, Lucifer\u2026 what does each name mean?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udf02 2.1. \u201cSatan\u201d: the adversary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201cSatan\u201d comes from the Hebrew <em>\u015b\u0101\u1e6d\u0101n<\/em>, meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>\u201cthe adversary,\u201d \u201cthe accuser\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Book of Job, he appears as the one who accuses man before God. His role is clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To point out sin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To accuse human weakness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To sow doubt about man\u2019s fidelity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 In today\u2019s spiritual terms:<br>Satan is the one who constantly whispers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou are not worthy,\u201d \u201cGod will not forgive you,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s not worth trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udf02 2.2. \u201cDevil\u201d: the one who divides<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDevil\u201d comes from the Greek <em>di\u00e1bolos<\/em>, meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>\u201cthe one who divides,\u201d \u201cthe slanderer,\u201d \u201cthe accuser\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This name perfectly describes his strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He separates man from God<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He divides families<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He divides communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He divides the human heart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 Wherever there is confusion, rupture, and moral chaos\u2026 there the <em>di\u00e1bolos<\/em> is at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udf02 2.3. \u201cLucifer\u201d: the fallen angel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLucifer\u201d means in Latin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>\u201clight-bearer\u201d (lux + ferre)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This term appears in Isaiah 14:12:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHow you are fallen from heaven, O morning star!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally referring to the king of Babylon, Christian Tradition has also interpreted it as a symbol of the fall of the most beautiful and exalted angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f Here is a key distinction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lucifer<\/strong> \u2192 the name describing his original state (an angel of light)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Satan \/ Devil<\/strong> \u2192 what he became after his fall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Therefore: <strong>yes, we are speaking of the same being<\/strong>, but from different perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Other names of the devil in Scripture (and what they reveal)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bible is surprisingly rich in names for the enemy. Each one reveals a facet of his activity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 Main names<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Beelzebul<\/strong> \u2192 \u201clord of the flies\u201d (Mt 12:24)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prince of this world<\/strong> \u2192 (Jn 12:31)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Father of lies<\/strong> \u2192 (Jn 8:44)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dragon<\/strong> \u2192 (Rev 12)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ancient serpent<\/strong> \u2192 (Gen 3; Rev 12)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tempter<\/strong> \u2192 (Mt 4:3)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Evil One<\/strong> \u2192 (Mt 13:19)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Each name is not decorative: <strong>it is a spiritual X-ray of how he acts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The hierarchy of evil: demons and fallen angels<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Tradition teaches that he did not fall alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Lucifer rebelled, he dragged with him a multitude of angels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHis tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven\u201d (Rev 12:4).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcc9 What does this imply?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There exist <strong>different levels of demons<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They maintain a hierarchical structure (imitating the heavenly order)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each has specific roles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Saint Paul expresses it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, the rulers of this present darkness\u201d (Eph 6:12).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udf02 Demonic hierarchies (according to tradition)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not a defined dogma, classical theology speaks of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Demonic princes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Powers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lesser evil spirits<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some well-known names in tradition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Asmodeus<\/strong> \u2192 associated with lust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mammon<\/strong> \u2192 wealth turned into idolatry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leviathan<\/strong> \u2192 pride<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Belial<\/strong> \u2192 moral corruption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f Important:<br>The Church does not promote morbid curiosity about these names, but rather <strong>spiritual vigilance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. The sin of Lucifer: the root of all evil<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udf02 What sin did he commit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tradition agrees on one word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Pride<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucifer did not want to serve. He wanted to be like God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI will not serve\u201d (<em>Non serviam<\/em>) \u2014an expression attributed to his rebellion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This total rejection of God explains something essential:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>The devil cannot love. He can only distort love.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. What does the devil do today? (very relevant)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde0 He does not act like in the movies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Forget the clich\u00e9 of spectacular possessions. His ordinary action is far more subtle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He normalizes sin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He ridicules faith<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He promotes relativism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He disguises evil as good<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 His main weapon today is not fear\u2026 but <strong>indifference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfaf His three main strategies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Temptation<\/strong> \u2192 suggesting evil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accusation<\/strong> \u2192 crushing you after you fall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deception<\/strong> \u2192 confusing truth and error<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Can the devil harm you?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes\u2026 but with limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 He is not omnipotent<br>\ud83d\udc49 He cannot force you to sin<br>\ud83d\udc49 He is subject to God<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Church teaches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The devil is powerful, but <strong>he is not God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Christ has already conquered: the key that changes everything<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the central point every Catholic must engrave in their heart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>The devil is already defeated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil\u201d (1 Jn 3:8).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The battle continues\u2026 but the victory is assured in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Practical application: how to defend yourself today<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing is not enough. You must live it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udee1\ufe0f Concrete spiritual weapons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Frequent confession<\/strong> \u2192 breaks his power<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Eucharist<\/strong> \u2192 real union with Christ<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Daily prayer<\/strong> \u2192 strengthens the soul<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Rosary<\/strong> \u2192 a powerful weapon (feared by the demon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Life in grace<\/strong> \u2192 the greatest protection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udded Key discernment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Always ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Does this bring me closer to God or lead me away?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because everything is decided there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
