They were <strong>confessions of faith<\/strong>, <strong>liturgical proclamations<\/strong>, <strong>theological syntheses<\/strong> that condensed into a few words the very core of Christianity: that Jesus Christ died and rose again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, in a world saturated with information but lacking depth, rediscovering these formulas is not an archaeological exercise. It is a return to the living root of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are oral formulas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral formulas are <strong>brief, memorizable, and repeatable expressions<\/strong> that early Christians used to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transmit the faith<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach new believers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pray and celebrate the liturgy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defend the truth of the Gospel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Classic examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cJesus is Lord\u201d (cf. Romans 10:9)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cChrist died for our sins\u201d (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:3)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMaranatha!\u201d \u2014 \u201cCome, Lord!\u201d (cf. 1 Corinthians 16:22)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These formulas were <strong>catechesis in its purest form<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The context: a Church without books\u2026 yet full of faith<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the disciples did not rush to write books. They went out to <strong>preach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the first Christians could neither read nor write. The transmission of faith was <strong>oral<\/strong>, living, communal. And in that context, these formulas were born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They arose from three urgent needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>To faithfully remember what had happened<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To transmit it without distortion<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To confess it publicly, even under persecution<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oral formulas as historical evidence of the Resurrection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we reach a key point, both theological and academic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important texts in the New Testament states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFor I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received:<br>that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures;<br>that he was buried;<br>that he was raised on the third day\u2026\u201d<br>(1 Corinthians 15:3\u20134)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The apostle Saint Paul uses technical language here:<br><strong>\u201creceived\u201d and \u201cdelivered.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This clearly indicates that he is quoting an <strong>earlier tradition<\/strong>, an already established oral formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is this so important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars agree that this formula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dates to <strong>just a few years after the Resurrection<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Likely originated in the Jerusalem community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Was learned by Paul after his conversion (around the 30s A.D.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Faith in the Resurrection is not a late legend<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>It was already fully formulated from the very beginning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no time to mythologize.<br>There was no slow evolution.<br>There was <strong>immediate testimony<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other oral formulas in the New Testament<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scripture is filled with these hidden treasures. Some of the most relevant include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Romans 10:9<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we see a brief, powerful, and dangerous formula in its time:<br>to say \u201cJesus is Lord\u201d meant denying that Caesar was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Philippians 2:6\u201311<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This passage, also attributed to Saint Paul, contains what many consider a <strong>primitive Christological hymn<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHe emptied himself\u2026<br>and humbled himself\u2026<br>therefore God exalted him\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It was likely recited in the liturgy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. 1 Timothy 3:16<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHe was manifested in the flesh,<br>vindicated in the Spirit\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Another rhythmic, almost poetic formula, clearly designed to be memorized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Revelation 22:20<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCome, Lord Jesus!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A brief, burning, deeply eschatological prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Theological dimension: faith that is proclaimed, not only thought<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral formulas teach us something essential:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Christian faith is not only intellectual\u2014it is confessional<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not enough to believe in the heart. One must <strong>proclaim with the mouth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Scripture says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI believed; therefore I have spoken\u201d (2 Corinthians 4:13)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Words have power.<br>Confession transforms.<br>Proclamation evangelizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The liturgy: the natural home of these formulas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These formulas were not only teaching tools\u2014they were <strong>living prayer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, many of them survive today in the liturgy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Creed<\/strong> is an evolution of these formulas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>\u201cAmen,\u201d \u201cAlleluia,\u201d \u201cKyrie eleison\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eucharistic acclamations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church did not invent its language from nothing.<br>It received it\u2026 preserved it\u2026 developed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practical application: what does this mean for you today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world where everything is constantly changing, oral formulas offer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. An anchor in truth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeating \u201cJesus is Lord\u201d is not automatic. It is <strong>remembering who rules your life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Simple yet profound prayer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You do not need complicated words.<br>A well-prayed formula can transform your soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Defense of the faith<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In moments of doubt, these formulas act like <strong>firm pillars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Direct evangelization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A single phrase can touch a heart more than an entire speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A final call: return to what is essential<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Christian communities had no grand temples, no libraries, no complex structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had something far more powerful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>A living faith, proclaimed with simple and burning words<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, you can do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with something simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cJesus is Lord\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cLord, have mercy\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCome, Lord Jesus\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat it. Believe it.
