We live in a strange era. Never before have there been so many speeches about rights, justice, equality, and progress\u2026 and yet it has never been so easy to see how evil presents itself as something normal, even admirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moral corruption is justified.
Lies become strategy.
Sin disguises itself as freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bible has a very precise word to describe this deep spiritual phenomenon: iniquity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But what does it really mean? Is it the same as sin? Why does it appear constantly in Sacred Scripture? And why, now more than ever, do we need to understand it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n This article is a guide to understanding what iniquity is, how it operates in the world, and how to combat it in the daily life of a Christian.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In common language, sin<\/strong> and iniquity<\/strong> are often used as synonyms, but in biblical theology they have different nuances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Scripture, the Hebrew word \u201cavon\u201d<\/strong> and the Greek \u201canomia\u201d<\/strong> indicate something deeper than a simple fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iniquity is the interior evil that deforms the conscience until sin appears normal or acceptable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We could express it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iniquity is not only committing an error<\/strong>, but perverting the sense of good and evil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the moment when a person stops saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is wrong, but I do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n and begins to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is not wrong\u2026 the problem is the one who criticizes it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n That is where iniquity appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the very first pages of the Bible, iniquity appears as a force that spreads and accumulates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Old Testament, the expression \u201cbearing iniquity\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cfilling up the measure of iniquity\u201d<\/strong> is repeated constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This reveals something important: When a society begins to call good what God calls evil, iniquity becomes institutionalized<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Book of Genesis describes the situation before the Flood in this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.\u201d This is not merely about bad actions. The New Testament goes even deeper into this phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Saint Paul uses a striking expression:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the mystery of iniquity is already at work.\u201d Why does he call it a mystery<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because iniquity has something deeply perplexing about it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n It does not appear suddenly. History shows that whenever iniquity becomes normalized, devastating consequences follow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before manifesting itself in laws, ideologies, or social structures, iniquity begins inside the human person<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus Christ explained this clearly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.\u201d Sin does not originate in circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It begins when the heart stops seeking the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First comes a small justification:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the soul becomes accustomed to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally evil becomes a way of thinking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At that point, iniquity has already taken root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iniquity has a very clear symptom: The prophet Isaiah denounced this more than 2,700 years ago:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWoe to those who call evil good, and good evil.\u201d That verse seems written for our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today we see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iniquity does not merely tolerate evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It celebrates it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Gospel does not ignore this problem. In Isaiah\u2019s prophecy about the Messiah we read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.\u201d Jesus does not merely forgive sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He uproots the very root of evil in the human heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why Christianity is not merely a moral system. Christ did not come simply to improve outward behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He came to regenerate the heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although the word may sound ancient, iniquity is very present in the modern world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can see it acting in three ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we justify our own faults and stop examining ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The danger is not falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The danger is stopping recognizing the fall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a society promotes values contrary to the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This happens when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Culture begins to shape consciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the most dangerous level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It occurs when laws and social structures legitimize evil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At that point sin is no longer merely tolerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is imposed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The battle against iniquity does not begin in parliaments or on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It begins in the soul of each Christian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are five fundamental spiritual weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iniquity thrives when we stop looking at our own hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The daily examination of conscience is a spiritual medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It forces us to ask ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sacrament of confession breaks the cycle of self-justification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the soul acknowledges its sin, iniquity loses power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Grace illuminates the conscience once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many Christians today live confused because they do not know the doctrine of the Church<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moral ignorance leaves the soul vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reading Scripture, the Catechism, and the spiritual tradition is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Christian is called to live in the world but not according to the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This requires courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it will mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n But fidelity always has a cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Iniquity is defeated through holiness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where there are holy souls:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Holiness is not an ideal for a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the true Christian revolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps the greatest victory of iniquity today is that it has convinced many people that it no longer exists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People speak about mistakes, failures, weaknesses\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n but they no longer speak about sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when the awareness of sin disappears, the need for salvation also disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why Christians have an urgent mission: Not in order to condemn the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But to open the path to the mercy of God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even though evil may seem to grow, Christian history reminds us of something fundamental:<\/p>\n\n\n\n iniquity never has the last word.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Christ has already conquered sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross appears to be defeat\u2026 And every soul that returns to God weakens the power of iniquity in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the real battle is not fought only within the structures of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is fought in the human heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there, when a person opens himself to grace, light always overcomes darkness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \ud83d\udca1 Final Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is not only whether the world is full of iniquity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is far more personal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What place does God\u2019s truth occupy in my heart?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Because every time a Christian chooses the good, even in small things, something invisible but powerful happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n iniquity loses ground\u2026 We live in a strange era.
