What is a heresy\u2026 and why does God allow it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>heresy<\/strong> is not simply an innocent theological mistake. In the classical sense, it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The obstinate denial of a truth that must be believed with divine and Catholic faith.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That is to say, <strong>it is not ignorance<\/strong>, but <strong>resistance to a known Truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saint Paul already warned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cFor the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine; but following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, they will accumulate teachers and stop listening to the truth\u201d<\/em> (2 Tim 4:3).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>God <strong>does not will heresy<\/strong>, but He <strong>permits it<\/strong> for a greater good:<br>\ud83d\udc49 to force the Church to <strong>formulate precisely what she has always believed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before heresy, many truths were lived; <strong>afterwards<\/strong>, they were defined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. What is a Council? Much more than a meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An <strong>ecumenical council<\/strong> is the highest expression of the Church\u2019s solemn Magisterium, where the bishops, in communion with the Pope, <strong>define doctrines binding on all the faithful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They do not invent anything new.<br>They <strong>defend, clarify, and specify<\/strong> what was already contained in Revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus promised it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWhen the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth\u201d<\/em> (Jn 16:13).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. The great heresies\u2026 and the Councils that overcame them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 ARIANISM \u2013 <em>Is Jesus God\u2026 or a creature?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> Arius claimed that the Son was neither eternal nor consubstantial with the Father.<br><strong>Consequence:<\/strong> Christ would no longer be truly God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Council of Nicaea I (325)<\/strong><br>Key definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cBegotten, not made, consubstantial (homoousios) with the Father.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>Every time Jesus is reduced to a \u201cmoral teacher,\u201d a \u201cspiritual leader,\u201d or a \u201cprophet,\u201d Arianism <strong>returns dressed in modern clothes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 NESTORIANISM \u2013 <em>Is Mary the Mother of God?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> Nestorius separated Christ into two persons, one divine and one human.<br>Mary would be only the mother of the \u201cman Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Council of Ephesus (431)<\/strong><br>Definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Mary is <strong>Theotokos<\/strong>, Mother of God.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>Whenever the \u201chistorical Jesus\u201d is separated from the \u201cChrist of faith,\u201d <strong>Nestorius speaks again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 MONOPHYSITISM \u2013 <em>Does Christ have only one nature?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> It denied Christ\u2019s true humanity after the Incarnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Council of Chalcedon (451)<\/strong><br>Magisterial definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>One single Person in two natures, without confusion, without change, without division, without separation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>Every form of spiritualism that despises the body, sacrifice, and the Cross <strong>draws from this root<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 PELAGIANISM \u2013 <em>Do we save ourselves?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> It denied original sin and the necessity of grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Councils of Carthage (418) and Orange (529)<\/strong><br>Definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Grace is <strong>absolutely necessary<\/strong> for salvation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>Moralism without grace, the idea that \u201cbeing a good person is enough,\u201d is <strong>recycled Pelagianism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 DONATISM \u2013 <em>Do the sacraments depend on the holiness of the priest?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> If the minister was sinful, the sacrament was invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Councils of Arles and Carthage (4th\u20135th centuries)<\/strong><br>Definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The sacraments act <strong>ex opere operato<\/strong>, by Christ, not by the minister.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>Real scandals do not invalidate real grace. The Church is holy <strong>even when her members are sinners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 ICONOCLASM \u2013 <em>Are images idolatry?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> Rejection of sacred images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Second Council of Nicaea (787)<\/strong><br>Definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Images are venerated, not adored.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>The symbolic and aesthetic emptying of churches <strong>impoverishes the faith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 PROTESTANTISM \u2013 <em>Faith without works? Bible without the Church?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multiple doctrinal errors:<\/strong><br>\u2013 Sola Scriptura<br>\u2013 Sola Fide<br>\u2013 Denial of the sacraments<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>Council of Trent (1545\u20131563)<\/strong><br>Definitions:<br>\u2013 Faith and works<br>\u2013 Biblical canon<br>\u2013 Sacraments<br>\u2013 The Mass as sacrifice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>Much \u201cCatholic\u201d language today is <strong>Protestant without realizing it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 MODERNISM \u2013 <em>Faith adapted to the taste of the world<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heresy:<\/strong> Truth changes with culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udee1 <strong>First Vatican Council (1870)<\/strong><br>Definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Faith does not contradict reason, but <strong>transcends it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>(Saint Pius X would later call it \u201cthe synthesis of all heresies\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Current impact:<\/strong><br>When doctrine is diluted to avoid discomfort, <strong>modernism smiles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Practical guide: living today with conciliar faith (theological and pastoral)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcff 1. Love doctrine: it is an act of charity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Truth <strong>does not oppress<\/strong>, it liberates (Jn 8:32).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcff 2. Do not oppose \u201cpastoral care\u201d to \u201cdoctrine\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>True pastoral care <strong>flows from truth<\/strong>, not from ambiguity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcff 3. Learn to detect modern heresies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Moral relativism<br>\u2013 A reduced Christology<br>\u2013 Sacraments reduced to symbols<br>\u2013 Grace without conversion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcff 4. Live in communion with the perennial Magisterium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every change is progress.<br>Not every novelty is authentic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcff 5. Pray for the Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Councils were born <strong>from crises<\/strong>, not from comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
