We live in an era of great scientific advancement, instant communication, and growing social sensitivity. And yet, amid this apparent progress, evil seems to be spreading more and more: wars, corruption, ideologies that destroy human dignity, attacks on family and life, loss of faith, scandals\u2014even within the Church. What is happening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The answer is not simple, but Sacred Scripture, the Church\u2019s Magisterium, and Tradition give us a key to reading history from a supernatural perspective: Mysterium Iniquitatis \u2013 the mystery of iniquity<\/strong>. This expression appears in the Second Letter to the Thessalonians and has been pondered for centuries by saints, theologians, and pastors. And today, more than ever, it must be understood to strengthen the faith of believers and awaken sleeping consciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The expression appears in 2 Thessalonians 2:7<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the mystery of iniquity is already at work; only he who now restrains it will do so until he is taken out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n St. Paul speaks of an evil force already active in the world, temporarily restrained until it fully manifests in the figure of the “man of sin”\u2014whom Tradition identifies as the Antichrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Mysterium Iniquitatis<\/em> is not just about a future apocalyptic figure: it is a present reality operating in history<\/strong>, trying to sabotage God\u2019s work, distort truth, and enslave humanity through sin. It is the hidden face of evil that works under the appearance of good, dissolves truth, darkens consciences, corrupts language, and incites rebellion against God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The root of the Mysterium Iniquitatis<\/em> is original sin<\/strong>. The serpent whispers to Eve, \u201cYou will be like God\u201d (Gen 3:5), and within the human heart is born a disordered desire for absolute autonomy\u2014to be a lord without God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All of Scripture intertwines with this mystery of evil:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ultimately, evil reveals itself fully in the Passion of Christ<\/strong>, where the Innocent One is betrayed, judged, condemned, and crucified. And yet it is precisely there that the mystery of iniquity is defeated by the mystery of love<\/strong>\u2014Mysterium Caritatis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 409) says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cChristian faith\u2026 teaches that the history of mankind is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents. Thus the devil has acquired a certain domination over man\u2026 This dramatic situation of \u2018the whole world [which] is in the power of the evil one\u2019 (1 Jn 5:19) makes man\u2019s life a battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s the great question. If God is good, why does He allow evil? Mysterium Iniquitatis<\/em> confronts us with the mystery of human freedom<\/strong> and the existence of fallen angels<\/strong>, who try to draw souls away from the light. It is a mystery because we experience it, but cannot fully comprehend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n St. John Paul II said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe mystery of evil is, at its core, the mystery of freedom. God risked our freedom out of love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Faced with the active presence of evil in the world, in the Church, and in our personal lives, the Christian is called not to live in fear, but in constant spiritual vigilance<\/strong>, nourished by grace. Here is a theological and pastoral guide to face this mystery:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWith all vigilance guard your heart, for in it are the sources of life\u201d (Proverbs 4:23) Ignorance is fertile soil for iniquity. Know your faith, read the Catechism, study Scripture. The truth of Christ is our first weapon against lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou will know the truth, and the truth will set you free\u201d (John 8:32)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The sacramental life is fundamental. Frequent confession and Holy Communion strengthen the soul in the fight against temptation and evil. The devil fears souls united with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Rosary, Eucharistic adoration, the Liturgy of the Hours\u2026 Prayer keeps us in union with God and protects us. St. Padre Pio used to say: \u201cThe Rosary is the weapon for these times.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, evil often hides behind seemingly good slogans: \u201creproductive rights,\u201d \u201clove without limits,\u201d \u201cfaith without dogma,\u201d \u201cinclusion without truth.\u201d We must learn to recognize the poison behind sweet-sounding words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not be scandalized by crises in the Church or persecutions. They are part of the battle. Jesus Himself warned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou will be hated by all because of My name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved\u201d (Matthew 10:22)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Even though evil may seem victorious, it was defeated on the Cross. The Mysterium Iniquitatis<\/em> will never have the final word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDo not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good\u201d (Romans 12:21)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Many Church Fathers\u2014such as Irenaeus, Augustine, and John Chrysostom\u2014taught that the Antichrist will be a real person who will arise at the end of time to deceive, seduce, and persecute God\u2019s people. But they also recognized that his spirit is already active in the world\u2014wherever Christ is denied, man is idolized, and God\u2019s Law is rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pope Benedict XVI, with theological clarity, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe mystery of evil is always present, and we must be armed with the shield of faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n In the face of the mystery of evil, we do not respond with fear, but with faith. In the face of sin\u2014with holiness. In the face of confusion\u2014with truth.
