From Guadalupe to Lourdes and Fatima, these extraordinary events have marked the history of the Church and have served as a source of conversion, healing, and spiritual renewal. But how does the Church determine the authenticity of a Marian apparition? In this article, we will explore the rigorous process the Church follows to discern these events, their theological relevance, and how we can apply their teachings in our daily lives.

The Meaning of Marian Apparitions

Marian apparitions are supernatural manifestations of the Virgin Mary at specific times and places, usually accompanied by messages directed at humanity. Throughout history, these apparitions have led to greater devotion, the conversion of sinners, and the reaffirmation of the faith of believers.

An emblematic example is the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 to Saint Juan Diego in Mexico, which resulted in the massive evangelization of millions of indigenous people. Another relevant case is that of Our Lady of Lourdes, whose apparitions in 1858 to Saint Bernadette Soubirous revealed the Virgin’s title as the “Immaculate Conception” and led to the creation of one of the most important pilgrimage shrines in the world.

Criteria for Discernment of Authenticity

Since not all alleged apparitions are genuine, the Church follows a careful and meticulous process to verify their authenticity. This process is guided by several fundamental criteria:

Conformity with Catholic doctrine: The message of the apparition cannot contradict Sacred Scripture or the Tradition of the Church. If any erroneous or heretical teaching is found, the apparition is dismissed.

Supernatural character: The apparition must show signs that surpass any natural or psychological explanation. This includes inexplicable events such as miracles, extraordinary conversions, or occurrences that defy the laws of nature.

Spiritual fruits: Jesus tells us, “By their fruits, you will know them” (Matthew 7:16). A genuine apparition produces fruits of conversion, increased faith, religious vocations, and greater prayer life among the faithful.

Credibility of the visionaries: The Church examines the moral, psychological, and spiritual life of those who claim to receive the apparition. The goal is to discern whether they are people of faith, humility, and without desires for protagonism or personal gain.

Absence of errors or manipulations: If fraud, manipulations, or economic interests are detected behind an alleged apparition, it is disqualified.

The Investigation Process

The evaluation of a Marian apparition follows a rigorous process led by the local Church, under the supervision of the diocesan bishop. This process includes:

Preliminary investigation: Testimonies are studied, visionaries are interviewed, and possible physical evidence, such as miracles or stigmata, is analyzed.

Theological and scientific commission: A commission of experts in theology, medicine, and psychology is appointed to rigorously evaluate the facts.

Examination of the message: The orthodoxy of the received messages and their conformity with Catholic faith are verified.

Consultation with the Holy See: In cases of great relevance, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith may intervene to issue a final opinion.

Finally, the bishop may issue three possible conclusions:

It is of supernatural origin (it is authentic).

It is not confirmed as supernatural (its authenticity cannot be verified, but it is not condemned).

It is not of supernatural origin (it is false or fraudulent).

Theological and Spiritual Relevance

Marian apparitions are a reminder of God’s love and Mary’s special mission in the history of salvation. She calls us to conversion, prayer, and trust in God.

A common message in all apparitions is the call to pray the Holy Rosary, do penance, and seek personal conversion. The Virgin at Fatima, for example, exhorted the faithful: “Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace in the world.” These teachings remain vital today, in a world increasingly distant from God.

How Can We Apply This in Our Daily Lives?

Increase our Marian devotion: Let us turn to Mary as our intercessor, entrusting her with our difficulties and needs.

Pray the Holy Rosary: As she has asked in so many apparitions, this powerful prayer strengthens our faith and brings us closer to God.

Seek personal conversion: Apparitions are a call to holiness. Let us ask ourselves: Am I living according to the commandments and the Gospel?

Practice penance and sacrifice: Small acts of love and sacrifice can help repair the sins of the world.

Conclusion

Marian apparitions are a gift from God for our time. Although the Church follows a rigorous process to discern their authenticity, Mary’s message is clear and universal: prayer, conversion, and trust in God. As Mary said at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5). Let us follow her example and live with faith in her call.

Important Update: The Vatican’s New Norms on Marian Apparitions (2024)

For decades, the Catholic Church used a relatively simple system to discern the authenticity of Marian apparitions and other supernatural phenomena. Traditionally, investigations concluded with one of these three formulas:

Constat de supernaturalitate (“it is established to be supernatural”)

Non constat de supernaturalitate (“it is not established to be supernatural”)

Constat de non supernaturalitate (“it is established not to be supernatural”)

However, this framework was profoundly revised by the Vatican in May 2024, when the Dicasterio para la Doctrina de la Fe published new norms for the discernment of supernatural phenomena.

These guidelines replace the old system with six possible pastoral decisions, far more nuanced and prudent in their approach.

The Six New Categories of Ecclesiastical Discernment

1. Nihil obstat

Literally meaning “nothing stands in the way.” It does not constitute an official declaration of supernatural authenticity, but it does recognize that the phenomenon may produce genuine spiritual fruits and allows public devotion or worship connected to it.

2. Prae oculis habeatur

This expression may be translated as “to be kept under observation.” It applies when there are significant positive elements, but also certain aspects that require ongoing pastoral vigilance.

3. Curatur

This indicates that the phenomenon requires special pastoral accompaniment because of possible risks, confusion, or spiritual deviations.

4. Sub mandato

In this case, the Vatican entrusts the discernment or pastoral direction of the phenomenon to a specifically designated ecclesiastical authority.

5. Prohibetur et impeditur

This involves a firmer intervention by Church authority, restricting or prohibiting certain activities connected to the phenomenon because of doctrinal, pastoral, or disciplinary concerns.

6. Declaratio de non supernaturalitate

This is the only formula that constitutes an explicit negative judgment regarding the supernatural character of the phenomenon.

An Important Shift: Prudence Before Definitive Declarations

One of the most significant aspects of the new norms is that the Church no longer seeks to declare quickly that an apparition is “supernatural.” The current emphasis is placed primarily on:

spiritual fruits,

the protection of the faithful,

doctrinal soundness,

and pastoral accompaniment.

This reflects an even greater attitude of prudence on the part of the Church, especially in an age marked by rapid media dissemination and social networks.

From Constat de supernaturalitate to Pastoral Discernment

The norms published in 2024 also reveal a shift in theological and pastoral emphasis. Rather than focusing exclusively on determining whether a phenomenon comes directly from Heaven, ecclesiastical discernment now pays closer attention to:

the doctrinal fidelity of the message,

the spiritual well-being of the faithful,

the absence of manipulation,

the psychological balance of the alleged visionaries,

and the fruits of conversion, prayer, and charity.

This does not mean that the Church no longer believes in authentic Marian apparitions. On the contrary: it demonstrates the immense seriousness with which the Church treats everything related to possible supernatural interventions.

Update Note (2026): This article has been updated to incorporate the new norms issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in May 2024 regarding the discernment of supernatural phenomena.

Marian apparitions have fascinated and inspired the faithful for centuries.
